Australian Festival through the years
1997 —100 people attended the first official
Australian Festival celebration with a game of Australian Football at
Elmington Park followed by a barbecue, then the Grand Final Party at the
Sportsman's Grille in Hillsboro Village.
1999 — Attendance reached 2,000, and partnerships
and sponsorships began forming with Friends of Elmington Park and Kentucky
Down Under.
2000 — Festival expanded to a two-day event with
about 5,000 guests and Outback Steakhouse becoming the major sponsor.
2001 — Festival 11 days after the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks provided opportunity to bring community together to heal
and celebrate all cultures.
2004 — Festival moved to Centennial Park and
jumped in size to three acres, about 40 tents and three main stages and an
event-management group was hired to oversee it.
2006 — Festival featured 50 artists and 50 hours
of music, 20 Aussie Exhibitors & Market Place Displays, 125 Sports
Down Under participants representing 10 clubs, 200 G'Day Mates
schoolchildren from four schools and 75 Australian Festival volunteers
over three days.
